  FAQ :

Why should I go to a specialist when I can buy the pill myself?
A disorder does not occur in isolation most of the time. In other words, all disorders are usually accompanied by co-existing disorders. Specialist has the comprehensive knowledge of the area and can help you in management of your problem.
Who is a specialist?
Specialist is one who has extensive experience and updated knowledge in a circumscribed area.

When to approach a specialist?
You must approach a specialist when

  • your problem is recurrent
  • you often need to take pills
  • symptoms are changing  or becoming more troubling
  • Symptoms impart limitations in your daily activities
  • Symptoms are interfering with your functioning
  • somebody else in your family is also suffering from similar problem
  • your family physician asks you to consult a specialist

What will an expert do?
An expert tries to understand impact of all the factors (precipitating, aggravating and maintaining the illness) and helps you to combat them. Since treatment is often multi-disciplinary, he becomes the team-leader and seeks advice from other physicians as and when required so that the patient can be benefitted most.

Obstacles to patient care:

  • I have a trivial problem: Most of us are ignorant regarding our problems. If a person suffers from three-four episodes of migraine a month, he is not bothered. Similarly, insomnia in the elderly is ascribed to “aging” and in younger persons to “tension”.
  • I do not require treatment: Most of the persons believe that these problems do not require treatment.
  • Why should I pay to a doctor for my minor problem?

Unfortunately, insurance- based care is not widely practiced in India, and most of the persons bear the cost of the treatment themselves. This is one major reason, why many persons are ignorant to their symptoms. But they do not realize that they are paying a larger amount (in terms of missing work, expenditure on self-medication, by avoiding personal and social responsibilities and lastly, consequent to mismanagement of initial symptoms) by saving a smaller sum.

  • Allopathic drugs have side-effects. I have been told that Ayurvedic/ Homeopathic drugs are not harmful. This is why I try to avoid allopathic drugs.
A drug is a chemical, and you must understand that any chemical going inside the body produces some effects. Those effects which are desired, are used for the treatment of illness and those that are produced along with them are called side-effects. Hence, it does not matter which drug are you taking (allopathic/

homeopathic/ ayurvedic etc), they all produce effects as well as side effects. We also emphasize here that since all drugs have side-effects, you must avoid taking any drug without asking a specialist.

Secondly, because of multiple reasons, most of the research is focused to allopathic medicine only. These drugs are marketed after stringent trials for their effects (as well as side effects). Hence, we have enough data regarding their adverse effects. On the contrary, research in Homeopathy/ Ayurveda is limited and data regarding their adverse effects is not available
